pickpocket attempt on the 5 bus
Dude in question is a tall black man with a shaved head, in a green sports coat. He had sat beside me on the bus while I was on the phone - as I was distracted, I felt my wallet being worked out of the leg pocket of my cargo pants. He was holding a folded coat over his 'busy' hand while talking to a presumed accomplice at the time. As soon as I noticed something was off, he hurridly got up with the other guy and went off the bus. I was too dumbfounded to say anything until it was too late.

I let the busdriver know as well. This was the northbound route on the 6:59pm stop at Union and 2nd.

Thank you to everyone for your wonderful suggestions on where to eat in Fremont. A friend and I were looking for somewhere to treat ourselves, and the easiest way to explain what she and I wanted was "First Date" food.

We ended up going to Bizzaro on 46th, and it was beyond all expectations.

We had the Ahi (Fish Special on Monday? Anthony Bourdain would frown on that), along with a light pasta and beet salad. We started with the Cheese plate, and all of the above were plenty enough to share for two people, with leftovers.

Thanks again for all your wonderful suggestions.

volunteer with Seattle Youth Garden Works
Seattle Youth Garden Works empowers homeless and underserved youth through gardening education and employment. We run a couple of small urban market gardens in Seattle that youth work tend to during the week, and they sell produce at the U-District market on the weekends.

We have work parties open to the public on Thursday mornings at one of our sites. Volunteers who come to these parties will not work with youth, but they will work with SYGW staff to cultivate new beds, weed existing beds, assist with greenhouse propagation, transplant seedling, and possibly assist with construction projects.

You can come for one work party or come every week. You can stay for an hour or for the whole time. You can bring your kids (but please don't bring pets). It's a great way to learn about urban gardening if you don't know where to start, but we also love working with experienced and master gardeners, too!

If you're interested in volunteering with us, leave a note here and I can send you a message with more information about times, places, and contact info. Thanks!

Live Music Venues
Hi!

Trying to find some great live music (rock & roll would be tops) in downtown Seattle. Anything else Seattle that's not the usual touristy stuff is welcomed. Names of decent and affordable hotels to stay at would be much appreciated as well.

Thanks for any help!! ;o)

I offered to help you-you refused to take our money. Then I said, I guess youre really up Shit Creek
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24585481/

A penguin is driving through Arizona when his car breaks down. He manages to walk to a mechanic, who tows his car back to the garage. "It'll take a few hours to fix- you should let someone know you're gonna be late."
The penguin asks to use the phone, but the only phone is a five miles walk away in town. The penguin is already hot from walking to the mechanic and now walking to town so he gets an ice cream cone. But because he has no fingers- just flippers, he can't hold it right and gets it all over his beak on the walk back to the mechanic.
The mechanic sees the penguin coming and says "It looks like you blew a seal!" and the penguin says, "Nah, it's just ice cream."

Vaycay spots
I am looking for personal recommendations on a vacation spot within short-road-trip-distance from Seattle. (We'd be driving, not flying.)

Does anyone know of a great, deluxe, resort-type place within maybe a five- or six-hour-drive from Seattle (or a place a lot closer)? We're basically looking for "Mexico in the Pacific Northwest," someplace where we can lounge around a luxurious pool in the warm summer weather, and do little else.

Anyone know of somewhere wonderful? :)

Oh dear, Pacific Northwest...
From Uncle John's Triumphant 20th Anniversary Bathroom Reader:

Because of high divorce and unemployment rates and consistently gloomy weather, the city statistics analyzing firm BestPlaces named Tacoma, Washington, the country's most stressful place to live.

City with the bumpiest, most pothole-infested roads: Seattle.

And a nod to our neighbors to the south...

The city with the most suicides per capita is Medford, Oregon.

How long does it take to drive from downtown Seattle to Gig Harbor? I know mapquest says about an hour but I really don't trust MQ as they are frequently wrong...

It would be driving in Friday morning if it makes any difference..

TIA!

I am not a number- I am a free man!

Not a prisoner- I'm a free man,
And my blood is my ooooooown now!
Don't care- where the past was,
I know where i'm going...out!

Fuckin' A- I am DONE.

And because [info]micahra is awesome, I found out Iron Maiden is playing the Allstate Arena June 11. Oh sure, TicketBastard is gonna cornhole me something fierce over the tickets, but it's IRON FUCKING MAIDEN. I still kick myself for not having been able to go to the '03 show in Dallas when Motorhead opened up for them.

I'm gonna go pick up Devi's brake pads, have a beer, and relax by working on the Civic for a little bit.

ETA:- BOOM- managed to outrun the thunderstorm on the way home and pick up a ticket for Maiden. It's waythegreatbloodyhell up in the nosebleed section, but fuck it- I haven't been to a concert since VNV Nation in April of last year.

And now for my finishing move.
Dimension & Tolerance final in T-minus 101.

Current class average on the assigned work is 69%, mine is 82.2%.

My pre-exam fight song is on and my spec & tolerance chart is printed & ready to go.

It's gonna be a while before I have to do this again, and that is why I can't stop smiling.

sofa cleaning
I have acquired a sofa that needs to be cleaned.

I found these people using google: http://www.jandrcarpetcleaning.info/

Has anyone in this community used them before? It's $45 for a sofa clean, I think that's a good deal... maybe even -too- good of a deal. Or does anyone have better recommendations?

Thank you in advance!

These bugs (icgatm)
What are these green flying bugs? They seem to be congregating in the trees which line Alaskan Way south of Yesler... there are swarms of these things. They aren't staying close enough to those trees, as I experienced bug assault while walking along that way. They don't just bounce off and mind their own business either, many of them decided to stick around on me and are probably in my house now.

Blood splatters or Flamingos?
Dear Seattle,

I may have solved the mystery of the "blood-splattered" billboard from this post.

I saw one of the boards today on Fairview Ave and it says (in white lettering over a white background, made out in between the magenta splotches):

THE FLAMINGOS ARE HERE

Woodland Park Zoo

Unfortunately I don't have a camera so I cant grab a pic to confirm its the same advertisement.

Please confirm/deny mystery solved.

Car insurance, responsibility, and morals.
My seagros, this weekend a [info]seattle poster put up a post asking for advice on what to do since yo was in an accident without liability insurance. Then when yo got 100 comments of snark, yo deleted the whole thing.

BAD POSTER! BAD DRIVER!

Ok, did we get that out of our system?

The problem is all youz out there that got all moralistic. The minimum liability insurance in this state is 25/50/10. $25k for personal injury, $50k for multiple injuries, and $10k for property damage. This is not morally responsible insurance coverage. This is cover-your-ass don't-give-me-a-ticket coverage.

Since when has a new car cost $10,000? The average used car on the road has a value of $14,000. The average new car, $28,000. Are you prepared to pay the difference between your minimum liability insurance and the cost of totalling a car, out of your pocket?

And the personal injury situation is even worse. It is easy to eat up $25,000 with a trip to the emergency room, a few days off work, and followup care for even minor scrapes and bruises. That's the reality of medical care costs. How morally upright are you going to feel when you hit someone and cripple them for life, they may never work or support themselves again, and the most you can offer is your $25,000? Will you go to the hospital and look them in the eyes and tell them that?

In both situations if you've got other assets - like a house with some equity - you can say goodbye to it carrying minimum liability insurance. Summa y'all are young and driving mommy and daddy's car or piggybacking on their insurance? Then their assets go away too! And you thought you were going to college and they wanted to retire some day.

So, don't get all holy and mighty preaching responsibility to some poor ass when you're not adequately covering your own. Provide a helpful answer or STFU.
